I'm Valerie L. Willis, founder of The Christy Foundation Incorporated 501(c)(3 ). 17+ years ago I identified a gap for people needing a second chance in life, when my life took a turn. As a college graduate working in my profession I noticed my skill sets were becoming obsolete due to outsourcing of US jobs.
I work very hard as a professional in Information Technology, (IT), but I needed a second chance to obtain a new skill set. Taking a break from IT to re-evaluate my career, I attended barber school in Raleigh, NC. Barber school required my complete focus, time and finances. After completing barber school I returned to the IT profession, but continued developing my new skill set as a barber by opening barber salon studio businesses and completing my barber instructors license. My work was not unnoticed because I was appointed by our former North Carolina Governor, Pat McCory, to serve on the NC Barber Examiner Board in 2014.
By serving on the board, I met a variety of people who presented their plea for a second chance to pick up a new skill set and become a positive contributor to our community. The Christy Foundation, Inc. provides an opportunity to well deserving people in the NC area to obtain that second chance via academic scholarships either at a community college to get a certification in a new trade skill or higher education degree.
The Chrsity Foundation, Inc. hosted racquetball tournaments at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University to raise money in early 2000, in which the proceeds went to the students. Unfortunately the popularity of racquetball has diminished and I had to redirect the fund raising efforts to Golf tournaments, which will be added as a new fundraiser venue.
Since I had to redirect our fund raising efforts to golf events, I also increased fundraising efforts via corporate donations like RSQE, Inc, Metro Styles, Inc and other corporations. In summary, your support via golf tournament sponsorship and/or corporate pledges, will help keep the Christy Foundation's mission and vision alive!
